Rarities and Unusual Sightings Report: April 2013

Compiled by André Marx

Several excellent rarity reports continued into the later part of summer from January to April 2013. African Skimmers appeared once again, this time at Vaalkop Dam and an immature Lesser Black-backed Gull was at a very accessible pan in Midrand for a while, to name just two national rarities. The spate of Pectoral Sandpiper records abound and could mean that species’ rarity status may have to be reviewed. SABAP2 records contributed a great deal once again to this report, as can be evidenced by the reference to pentads (5 minute squares) in the report, as did the Wider Gauteng 100km Challenge with a number of birders coming up with some specials in their pursuit of a 400+ total for the region for this year. My thanks to everyone who contributes records directly to me at the e-mail address given below..

Rarities and Unusual Sightings Report: December 2012

Compiled by André Marx

The summer started off with a bang when a few really good rarities popped up in the region, with probably the biggest being the remarkable find of a Collared Flycatcher in a suburban garden in Randburg; this is probably the biggest twitch in Gauteng for a number of years with a few hundred birders from all over the country managing to see and photograph it. Other excellent local rarities included Black-tailed Godwit at Marievale and African Skimmer at Mkhombo Dam.

Rarities and Unusual Sightings Report: August 2012

Compiled by André Marx

The late summer and winter period for 2012 was notable due to the number of ‘dry country’ species that were seen in our region, with African Red-eyed Bulbul, Grey-backed Sparrowlark, White-crested Helmet-shrike and Sickle-winged Chat being notable, although the chat may be a scarce but regular winter visitor to the region.
